Professor Da Boot’s Rules For Booting Drivers

Professor Da Boot - Joey Logano

Professor Da Boot – Joey Logano

When The Bump and Run Works

Since we lost Earnhardt Senior, there has been more or less a gentleman’s agreement between NASCAR drivers about the rules of civilized racing. Lately, however, there is one driver who seems to be gaming those rules.  He seems to have his own set of rules on booting that driver out of his way.  That driver is Joey Logano.

So in that spirit I have drafted the unsaid rules for his class in Booting Drivers:

1. I do not need to look, I know they are flipping me off.
2. Never admit that you wrecked the car in front of you.
3. Never admit that you made contact with the car in front of you.
4. Never acknowledge that you noticed the wreck at all.
5. Do not apologize for the wreck, even after you’ve seen the video.
6. Do not be involved in the wreck.  It is bump AND run, run being the important part.
7. If he had the faster car, then he couldn’t have been bumped. Q.E.D.
8. If he wants to chat with you in the infield, stay in your car.
9. If you are already out of your car when he comes to chat, keep your helmet on.
10. Never go anywhere without your Dad.
11. If the news guy asks if you are a genius, the answer is “Yes.”
12. If the air can make you wreck, there was really no way you were going to be able to deal with me.
13. When you are not admitting fault for the wreck you didn’t see, always mention your sponsors.
14. If it ain’t broke, fixing it makes it your fault when it don’t work.
15. Yes, I blocked you.
16. If you’re complaining about me blocking you, then it obviously worked.

E.W.

I”m positive that I don’t have all the rules enumerated here.  I think I need to go watch some old races with Senior in them.

NASCAR Nicknames

What’s In A Name?
Updated September 2018

“Smoke” ~ Tony Stewart 3-Time Sprint Cup Champion

If you’re a new NASCAR fan you might hear some names thrown around on broadcasts of races, or on social media networks, that you can’t figure out. Who is Smoke? What’s The Monster Mile? Why do they call that guy by that name?

This is something that recently happened between some posts I made on FB for the #SmokeWillRise countdown to Daytona 2014.

My brother-in-law went looking for a driver named Smoke and couldn’t find one. So he assumed it was a nickname, but wasn’t sure.

That made me think about the Nicknames we’ve become used to in NASCAR as fans and where they came from.

How did Matt Kenseth get his nickname Matt The Brat? Why is Hollywood Hammond called Hollywood and who called him that? Do you know why Roger Penske is called The Captain?

Now being a Smoke fan, I of course know that Smoke refers to 3-Time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart. And I know where his nickname comes from. Continue reading

When Controversy Impacts Fans

I’m a NASCAR fan. I have been a fan since I was 13 years old. You’ll have to trust me when I say that was a very long time ago.

Over the decades NASCAR has gone through many changes. Some good. Some not so good. But one thing that has been consistent throughout its history is the sense of family between competitors and fans.

We like being race fans. We love our drivers and we’re thrilled that our stars are approachable and don’t take us for granted. Continue reading

The 2013 Nascar Season

Racing Comes To A Close – For This Year

The year comes to a close for Nascar’s 2013 racing season. Despite the grumbling and hysterics on Twitter, I think it was an interesting and exciting year. But then I’m a race fan, not a fair weather fan.

I’m not so quick to blame Nascar for the poor attendance and lower TV ratings. People who do this don’t understand how much the Great Recession has hit this country. Many of us are still struggling to recover and we can’t afford our season race tickets. And for many of the races, require cable/dish to view. That too costs money many don’t have. But that’s a different story.

You can’t write about the end of the season without first saying a big Congratulations to the champions of the season. Continue reading

New Rules 11/1 /2013!

At the end of “Real Time with Bill Maher” fans always look forward to his New Rules feature. They’re not only entertaining and funny, but they often inform and call people on the carpet for being politically stupid.

As was the case in this weeks Episode #299. But the New Rule that caught my attention in the segment featured Stewart-Haas Racing‘s Danica Patrick! Continue reading

The Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust

Jason Leffler

Jason Leffler and Charlie

Jason Leffler did not have life insurance when he died. Todd Braun, current Turner Scott Motorsports owner Harry Scott and Great Clips chief financial officer Steve Overholser have established a fund to help his son.

Of course the scammers are already out trying to capitalize on your generosity and steal money from this sad tragedy and the loving efforts of those who would like to help. If you’re interested in helping, please make sure you are giving money to organizations that are directly connected to the Trust. As of now, there are two ways to donate where you can be ultimately assured your money will go to the Trust.

Donations may be sent to:
The Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust, c/o SunTrust Bank, 232 Williamson Road, Mooresville, NC 28117.

Set up by the USAC Benevolent Foundation:
Charlie Dean Leffler Education Fund, USAC Benevolent Foundation, c/o Executive Director Bill Marvel, 4910 W. 16th Street Speedway, Speedway, IN 46224. Donations should be earmarked for that program. Reported by Bob Pockrass

Or if you’re looking for an easy online way to contribute:
The Tony Stewart Foundation and Jeff Patterson set up a GoFundMe project Jason Leffler Memorial Fund.
The online fund will help Jason Leffler’s young son by securing his educational needs and insure that he has the same chances that the rest of us enjoy. All the money will be given to the Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust c/o Suntrust Bank.

Our Prayers For Jason Leffler

Jason Leffler and his son Charlie

Jason Leffler and his son Charlie

Husband, Father, Professional Race Car Driver

Last night around 8:30pm eastern, Twitter users began sharing posts about a terrible crash that occurred in a 410 sprint car race at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey. The speedway is a 0.625 mile oval dirt track with high banks. During the first heat race of the night, the 2nd placed car hit the wall and flipped several times on the front straightaway. The driver had to be cut from the car and was rushed to the local nearby hospital. That driver was Jason Leffler, one of Nascar’s favorite sons.

Between 8:30 and about 9:15pm tweeters were sending out their prayers that he was ok and wishing his family strength to help him recover. Those with racing timelines, saw an instant flood of get well messages and hopeful tweets. A sign that this wasn’t an ordinary guy. But rather one that was well liked, well thought of and even loved by team mates and those he worked with alike. Not to mention the flood of fans who were rallying to his side, even if it was merely from cyberspace.

My first indication something had happened was from our current Nascar Champion Continue reading

Deepest Sympathies For Dick Trickle

Thoughts, Prayers & Sympathies
To Those In Grief

A NASCAR Legend Dies

If you’ve been around my blog or Facebook page you know my family and I are big fans of racing. Especially Nascar racing.

Nascar fans are a unique group of people. We’re not at all like the stereotypes the media in all it’s forms tries to paint us as. Our range of fans spans way beyond the boundaries of North America as a whole. It touches every part of the world and if some of these critics would go to a race and meet the people, they would learn that.

We’re not all uneducated southern rednecks either. You’ll find people from all walks of life at a race rooting for their favorite driver. Doctors, professors, lawyers, computer professionals, construction engineers and everything in between.

We’re a family; sometimes a dysfunctional family, but still a family. We may not like the same drivers, we may diss on your favorite driver. But at the end of a race, you won’t find any of us beating up or shooting another fan because they happen to like the driver who crashed our guy out of the race. We come together like no other sport does when tragedy strikes in our midst. It’s a phenomenon that has been discussed and written about by sports reporters for decades. Continue reading

Historic Nascar Truck Race On Dirt!

Eldora Speedway

Eldora Speedway

Eldora Race Format

A Nascar race on dirt has not been seen for 40 years. The last time Nascar saw a dirt track was September 30, 1970 in Raleigh, N.C. Richard Petty won the Home State 200 at the one-mile State Fairgrounds Speedway. But that’s about to change on July 24, 2013!

The Nascar Camping World Truck series heads to New Weston, Ohio and the famous Eldora Speedway dirt track owned by 3-time Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart for the inaugural “Midsummer Classic”.

Nascar announced on April 09, 2013 the format for this historic race. Unlike asphalt or concrete, dirt tracks have long held a different format to racing events. And that will be the case with this inaugural event. Anyone familiar with dirt track racing will recognize the heat sessions to qualify for the main event at the end of the evening. And that’s basically what’s happening at Eldora. Continue reading
