There are two good bets this week if you think like the computer. One is that Indy will cover the spread. Considering last week, they made it clear that they don’t plan to win any more regular season games, I’ll be surprised if this bet is still good after the game.

The other good bet is that Seattle will beat Tennessee thus, covering the spread. I like this bet.

As a result of the decision by Indy to lose the final two games of their regular season, it’s interesting that they could face the Jets again in the playoffs. The computer says they will. Maybe the Jets beating their starters would make the Indy fans fill a little less gypped. Here’s how the playoffs look to me:

Wild Cards AFC Baltimore New England 17 24 New England

About cheerleaders in coats… There is a commercial on lately where a bunch of cheerleader types jump and do a cheer, but they are in jeans and flannel shirts. It occurred to me that without the outfits, cheerleaders are just annoying.

The Physics of Santa

DecHomeSantaSanta’s Sleigh

While having lunch with The Prince yesterday, we discussed how Santa is able to get to all of the kids houses overnight. So I did some back-of-the-napkin calculations to figure out if Santa’s excursion violates causality. I should probably point out that I am neither a physicist, mathematician or doctor, but I play all of them on the Internet.

Ok, so… just how many places does Santa have to hit worldwide? According to Wikipedia (Yeah I know… and if you’re reading this and don’t know, don’t bet on facts from Wikipedia. It’s just a good starting place.), there are 2.1 billion Christians on Earth. Now, since it appears to me that most of them are in Texas, I’ll use the average family size from the U.S. Census: 3.14 people. Hmm… Pi. That means Santa has to hit 670 million homes.

Next I’ll assume that they are evenly spread across the earth. Several sources indicate that the total area is about 150 million square kilometers (The Prince says, “What’s a kilometer?” so make it 93 million square miles). That works out to 4.5 km2(1.7 mi2) per home. Now make that area circular and we get a radius of 1.2 km (.75 mi). So from house to house is about 2.4 km (1.5 mi). So the total length of the trip is 360 million km (220 million mi). That’s more than a thousand times farther than my Chevy truck has gone. Continue reading

No good bets this weekend per the computer, but I got a feeling that Baltimore can’t beat anybody by 10 points, much less Chicago.  With the loss of Chris Henry. I expect Cincinnati to play with more than a little extra heart this weekend so maybe a win for them.

So much for agreement with the computer. Seems that the Pats have fallen out of favor for the Superbowl now and a rising star in the form of San Diego has shown up for the first time in the model. New Orleans wins it only by the barest of margins. Here’s how it looks:

Wild Cards AFC Baltimore New England 17 25 New England

There is one good bet today, Cleveland will cover the massive spread. So far I’m about skunked this year on betting that bad teams will show up and play, so this should be fun.

I noticed something happy though, it appears that the lines actually moved some this week, good omen for the economy I guess.

The Superbowl preview last week looked pretty bad for the Pats. I get the feeling that they expected NO to curl up in a fetal position as many of the teams playing them seem to do. Instead they came to play football and the Pats played so flat I’m surprised they didn’t get beat worse. Despite that beating the computer still says the Pats are the better team. Here’s how the playoffs shake out:

Aunt Mildred

One of my hobbies is baking breads.  I started doing this many years ago.  When I started some of my breads were only edible by outdoor creatures but I got better pretty quick.  Most people seemed to like my breads and I know I did.  Then one day I went to a restaurant called Razoo’s where, with my crawfish et tu fe, I had a drop biscuit exactly like the ones I make homemade.  Well… not exactly, their biscuit was MUCH more fluffy than mine.  I was annoyed.

I started experimenting and quickly discovered that adding more milk acheived the fluffyness that their biscuits had.  After that, I started upping the liquid in all of my recipes, which improved them nicely.

A few years ago I met the Queen’s Aunt Mildred and Uncle Leonard.  Absolutely wonderful people, I sat in their kitchen and talked to Leonard for hours and honestly I didn’t want to leave when we had to go.  At the time, the Prince was in diapers and had just learned to do things like climb down out of the truck.  It was obvious when Mildred got around him that she was one of those natural great moms.  I think they had eight kids, so maybe practice made perfect.

Sadly, that one meeting of Aunt Mildred was all I’ll get in this life, she passed a short time back.

Now many years ago one of my Grandfathers passed away and unfortunately took his barbecue slaw recipe to the grave.  Sometimes I wonder if he did that on purpose…  Since then my cousin has been trying to replicate it and appears to be very close, although we both agree that something isn’t the same with it.  He’s still working on it, we will find what’s missing.

Talking about this with the Queen prompted her to start looking at favorite recipes from our elders.  One of those recipes was for plain white bread from Aunt Mildred.  She gave me that recipe to make for her and insisted that I follow it exactly, which meant using shortening instead of butter.  Now, there’s nothing really unusual about this recipe, all bread recipes are pretty much the same.  However, when I made this, it was obvious that something was different.  When the dough was finished and ready for kneading, it was VERY light compared to all of my other doughs.  The finished product was also VERY fluffy.

I don’t care for the taste of shortening in bread, perhaps because of my three years of being Spongebob at KFC.  But I wanted to know if that was what accounted for the texture of Aunt Mildred’s bread.  So I started experimenting, first by replacing shortening with butter in her recipe.  It made no difference in the texture at all, still just as fluffy.  (And despite the Queen, it tasted better…)

The only other difference I could see was using water vs. milk.  Changing those around really made no difference at all.  So I was puzzled.  Then it occurred to me that one step was different, and it was just technique, nothing in the mix, just how you mix it.  I guess in the recipes I first used, mixing the dry yeast in the flour and pouring the liquid into that to make the dough was a time saving step.  But in Aunt Mildred’s bread, she puts the yeast into the warm liquid first and lets it grow for twenty minutes.

Since I’m kinda dumb, I didn’t really believe that the order of mixing the yeast would make a difference.  So up until last night, I never tested this on my other recipes.  Last night I made my usual Parker House rolls for dinner today.  But this time, I changed the technique.  The difference is stunning.

Thank you Aunt Mildred.

I think that Uncle Leonard must be the only man on earth luckier than me.

Yesterday, while in the kitchen making a grocery list, the Prince comes and asks, “Whatcha doin?”

I said, “I’m getting the turkey dinner ready, cause Momma’s sick.”

“Wow, you’re gonna make a turkey from scratch?”

Nothing pumps your ego like your kid thinking you can produce a turkey from thin air…

Carolina finally won me a bet! I’ll have to look through my files and see if that’s ever happened before. This week there are two good bets. It would appear that a lot of rabid Miami fans spent the week in Vegas, Tampa will cover that 10 point spread by beating them. And Cleveland will cover the spread against Baltimore… Did the boys in Vegas miss Baltimore’s last game?
