Your 2012 Year In Blogging

Wordpress Jetpack Blog Analytics

If you have a WordPress blog and you use Jetpack check out the Annual Report they put together for you. The report is private, but you can check it out and make it public.

We all put a bit of ourselves into our blogs and it’s nice to know that others find our posts helpful, interesting or entertaining. You can discover what people are searching for and if you’re so inclined, write more about the popular topics you’ve already shared.

Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage. In other words it helps you understand what visitors are looking for, how to increase traffic, maximize your marketing budget and resources.

Now our blog wasn’t made to make money or start a business. So for us, these statistics are simply interesting. But if you are running a business and your company has a website or blog then you want to know what you’re getting for your buck or two on the internet.

This isn’t a new thing in the world of business on the internet. When I managed the web infrastructure at a large Fortune 100 finance company back in the 90’s, corporate big wigs always wanted to make sure this expense was worth the effort. Back in the beginning of internet interest and technology, many corporations weren’t sure how this technology would benefit their business. Wow how things have changed. Now if you have a business, there’s not even a second question about having a presence on the web.

There are many web analytic tools and products that can help you track the use of your site. Some are free and of course some are not. It all depends on what you’re looking for. The Web Design Ledger has a list of 10 Useful Website Analytics Tools that you might want to check into if this is something you’re interested in.

For our little family blog, we’re fine with Jetpack  and we thought our annual report was kind of interesting, for us  anyway.
