A NASCAR Legend Dies

If you’ve been around my blog or Facebook page you know my family and I are big fans of racing. Especially Nascar racing.

Nascar fans are a unique group of people. We’re not at all like the stereotypes the media in all it’s forms tries to paint us as. Our range of fans spans way beyond the boundaries of North America as a whole. It touches every part of the world and if some of these critics would go to a race and meet the people, they would learn that.

We’re not all uneducated southern rednecks either. You’ll find people from all walks of life at a race rooting for their favorite driver. Doctors, professors, lawyers, computer professionals, construction engineers and everything in between.

We’re a family; sometimes a dysfunctional family, but still a family. We may not like the same drivers, we may diss on your favorite driver. But at the end of a race, you won’t find any of us beating up or shooting another fan because they happen to like the driver who crashed our guy out of the race. We come together like no other sport does when tragedy strikes in our midst. It’s a phenomenon that has been discussed and written about by sports reporters for decades.

So when we hear about one of our own leaving this world, it hits us all and brings sadness into our midst. Yesterday such an event happened. One of our legends, Dick Trickle could no longer deal with the severe chronic pain he has been suffering and took his own life.

Dick Trickle

A native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin and lived in Iron Station, North Carolina. He drove to a cemetery where his oldest grandchild, Nicole Bowman, was buried after dying in a car accident 12 years ago. He placed a 911 call to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department to inform them they could find his body there and then hung up. He then shot himself to end the chronic pain he could no longer deal with.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, three children, three grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. The family plans a private funeral.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to Victory Junction Gang Camp, 4500 Adams Way, Randleman, NC 27317.

Everyone in my family sends our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers to Mr. Trickle’s family, friends and all his fans.
